4.2 - More on Fractal Dimension

10. Measuring Fractal Dimension

How
can one characterize these patterns we have created in the laboratory?
Adjectives such as spiky, tenuous, ramified, or compact provide
a qualitative nonscientific description of growth patterns. The
observation that many of these growth patterns are *self-similar*
(i.e., each piece of the pattern is geometrically similar to the
whole) over many measurement scales leads to a clearer mathematical
means of quantifying these patterns. Such self-similar objects are
called * fractals*.
